Wheeler's Yard

The hipster quotient for this place just shot through the roof. When we first reached, one of us said, "Is this place open?" Turns out it was, just that the entrance was just round the corner. 

Situated in a factory, Wheeler's Yard sells bicycles and food- that's a combination that is probably the first in Singapore.

We went here after lunch so we decided to settle for drinks and desserts, which unfortunately fell flat of our expectations. 

We should have known since the cakes were left at one side of the counter and were not listed on the menu itself. 

The Lemon Tart here was average with the pie crust tasting like it was bought off the shelves of a supermarket. 

The Tiramisu had a proportion of lady fingers : cheese that I didn't like. For the same price, L'Atelier Tiramisu beats this hands down. The coffee taste was weak. A completely forgettable tiramisu.

Service is incredibly slow when they are operating at full capacity. Interesting place, but one visit is more than sufficient.

House of Tau Sar Piah

On our Balestier Trail last week (I'm taking forever to get started on that post), we knew that we definitely couldn't miss out on buying some tau sar piah home. It was slated to be our last stop and it was only last week that I learnt that there is a stretch of shophouses in Singapore synonymous with tau sar piah. 

We were disappointed to find out that Loong Fatt Eating House was closed as it was reputed to be the first to sell tau sah piah along the road in the 1970s and had very decent tau sar piahs. Nonetheless, we proceeded to House of Tau Sar Piah. 

This place was founded by Mr Heng Hung Guan and he has been in the business for almost 40 years. When we visited, it was just him and his wife in the shop. A very friendly boss, we had a friendly afternoon chat with him when we bought the tau sar piah.

There weren't much flavours left by the time we reached (4pm)- only salty tau sar piah and pineapple tau sar piah, instead of the usual wide variety they have.

As the only kind of tau sar piah I'm used to eating is those bought from Malaysia (those with the crumbly salty filling), this was the first time I'm eating a Salty Tau Sah Piah (60 cents) other than the Malaysian kind. One thing that differentiates the tau sar piah here is that it is vegetarian!

The filling is less salty than I would like it to be. In fact, it bordered on being a little sweet. Flaky and crispy crust. Apparently considerably smaller than those from Loong Fatt.

I wouldn't specially make my way here just for the tau sar piah here. It's not bad but not not fantastic either. Just to reiterate, if you need to buy vegetarian snacks for any occasion, this is a very good option. Anyway, I found this article rather interesting and it may serve as a good guide for your tau sar piah buying in Balestier.
