The Courtyard

As the birthday girl wanted to celebrate her birthday by going for high tea, we decided to go to The Courtyard at Fullerton. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, there are two seatings, one from 2 pm to 4 pm, and the other from 4:30 pm to 6 pm. It costs $55++ per adult.

The Courtyard has lots of natural light flooding in, although it can get a tad hot when the sun is in its full glory.

The afternoon tea consists of unlimited replenishment of the food on the tiers and free flow coffee and tea.

Although the quantity of food did not look like much initially, we walked away from the table feeling very full. There was a mixture of savouries and sweets, and I preferred the latter.

Amongst the sweets, the ones that stood out were the Pecan Maple Orange Tart, Chocolate Moulluex and Ondeh Ondeh Macaroon. For the Ondeh Ondeh Macaroon, it was refreshing to take a bite and go, "Oh my, was that a gula melaka flavoured macaroon"? I seldom eat macaroons because I find them too sweet but this was an interesting spin to the dainty French pastry. The Pecan Maple Orange Tart was not too sweet and the pecans lifted the profile of the tart.

For the savouries, I kept replenishing the Five Spiced Smoked Chicken with Guacamole on Sesame Tartlet - check out the gorgeous beet juice coloured tart! The other savouries were decent, but nothing to shout about.

We rounded off the meal with some coffee- look at the cute Fullerton bear. The tea selection was also interesting. When I could not make up my mind on what tea to drink, the waiter said "Aiya, you just trust me, I give you a good pot of tea." He selected the Silver Moon for me, which was a herbal and fruit tea, and it was indeed a good choice because of the subtle fruit hints.

What really stood out was the service here. They helped to take a picture of us and put it in a unique Fullerton-themed folder. They were also constantly at hand to ensure that everything was ok. One of them even demonstrated his magic tricks to entertain my niece!

Overall, the food here is decent but limited in variety. Service stands out nonetheless, and great ambience for afternoon tea.

The Clifford Pier

More than a decade ago, whenever I took a bus to have lunch with my mother in the CBD, the bus used to stop near Clifford Pier. The Clifford Pier today, is a far cry from the Clifford Pier back then.

Clifford Pier was built between 1927 and 1933 and was named after Sir Hugh Clifford, the former Governor of the Straits Settlements. It was a landing point for immigrants and other sea passengers. With the construction of the Marina Barrage, the Clifford Pier ceased operations on 1 April 2006.

For my birthday celebration, we decided to try their Singapore Heritage Afternoon Tea.  From Monday to Friday, the high tea is between 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, whereas on weekends and public holidays, the high tea is between 3 pm to 5 pm.

Gorgeous setting, with high ceilings and colour tones alluding to the place's nautical origins.

The Singapore Heritage Afternoon Tea ($48++ per adult on weekdays and $55++ per adult on weekends and public holidays), consists of one tea tray of sweet items, a buffet of savoury items and free flow of coffee / tea. The tea was from TWG.

It was interesting to observe the demographic of the people having tea here. They were either a group of well-dressed women (with a couple of groups organising hen parties for the brides-to-be), or reluctant men being dragged here by their girlfriends / wives. Women's money is always easier to earn! It followed that, a lot of the sweet items were left untouched by the women who of course were concerned with their waistlines.

The afternoon tea is not your usual Western high tea, but instead seeks to represent Singapore's culinary past and present. For the sweet items, there were Pandan Swiss Roll, Bandung Macaron, Honey and Mango Financier, Soft Centered Coconut Chocolate Cake, Mini Kopi & Almond Butter Buns, Bika Ambon, and Plain Scone with Jam.

Having the Pandan Swiss Roll and the Bika Ambon was like making a trip to Bengawan Solo, and the Mini Kopi & Almond Butter Buns were like those from local bread shops- the thought that popped up in my head was, why am I paying so much for food that I could buy from Bengawan Solo? Honestly, I could not tell much difference in terms of the taste. While decent, nothing in particular stood out.

There were also Plain Scone and Tropical Fruit Scone, which came with Passion Fruit and Mango Jam and Homemade Kaya. I am a sucker for scones and these suited me well. I especially liked the passion fruit and mango jam which was tart and gave a nice lift to the scones. My husband, however, found these little darlings not buttery enough.

Onto the savouries, there was a pretty interesting selection- more interesting than the sweets. There was the Chilli Bak Kwa Jam on Savory Egg Tart. While this was an interesting pairing, I did not particularly fancy the savoury egg tart, which tasted somewhat like egg quiche.

Deep fried food are always crowd pleasers, and here they have Calamari Ring (with a wasabi mayo dip) and Jalapeno Cheese.

These were the Cruffin with Masala Potato and Curry Leaves as well as Prawn Fritter. The cruffin was essentially a mini curry puff.

Other food items to look out for include the Chilli Crab Bao, which were mini mantous accompanied with Chilli Crab sauce. The Carrot Cake with X.O. Chilli and Scrambled Egg was so fragrant and delicious, we repeatedly topped up our plates with these . We did not have enough space for the Kurobota Pork Kong Bak Bao, but I think this is something certainly worth trying.

There was also a small salad section, which was pretty decent- seafood salad and smoked duck salad.

For drinks, there was a choice of soya bean milk or bandung, with sago, chinchow etc on the side. I particularly liked the soya bean milk as it did not have an artificial taste and was not too sweet.

There were also live stations dishing out food on the spot. There was one serving Kueh Pie Tee and Popiah- definitely get the Kueh Pie Tee as it is topped with crab meat. There was another station serving Prata and Roti Jala Wrap, accompanied with Nonya Chicken Curry. While the prata was not the most inspiring, the chicken curry is worth trying. There is also a station for making your own rojak and there was a wide variety of ingredients (apple, starfruit, jambu, guava, pineapple etc.) you could choose from.

There is definitely enough food at this high tea to fill you up. In fact, I was so full, I skipped dinner. However, I felt like I was paying more for the ambience than for the food. The food was decent, but I felt as though I could get more bang for my buck at a hotel's buffet instead. That said, this is still a decent choice for an afternoon tea.

Tip: Make your reservations a few weeks in advance (especially if you want to come by on a weekend), because the seats here fill up very quickly. We had to book 3 weeks in advance. Also, do ask about the available credit card discounts- there was a 15% discount for certain credit cards.

Smoothie House (One Raffles Place)

Smoothie House is a popular shaved ice store that originates from Taiwan. It is located next to my favourite vegetarian place in Raffles Place- Green Dot, which is very packed during lunch time.

Smoothie House has a few branches in Singapore and One Raffles Place is your safest bet on a weekend to enjoy your dessert in complete peace because human traffic is very low on weekends.

We ordered a Tiramisu & Red Beans Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta ($12.90). The combination of tiramisu and red beans might strike one as being a strange one, but it turned out to be an enjoyable dessert. The soft-like-snow ice had tiramisu flavour, and there were abundant pieces of lady fingers (although they were dry, instead of the usual ones in your tiramisu which are soaked in coffee liquor) and little bits of chewy mochi. Mop that up together with the red bean and it will be the perfect way to round off a meal. I would recommend sharing the dessert because it's a rather large portion.

Dojo

It is my second time here even though I'm not a burgers person. You won't find your usual chicken or beef burgers here. This place is a specialised pork burger restaurant.

We asked the guy at the counter what was good and he said that the Stevo was good. Apple sauce on roasted port belly slices. Mmmmmm! BUT it was sold out! We will be back for it.

We settled for a Kaiju ($12), pork patty with mushrooms, with sauce made from a combination of shiitake, champignon and paddy straw mushrooms. I love mushrooms and this place didn't disappoint at all with its thick pork patty with a generous portion of mushrooms. Considering that the price includes fries and a drink, (and that the food is pretty good too), it is rather value for money.

Service was excellent. I seldom say that about a place, simply because there aren't many places with excellent service. But here, the people know what they are talking about, they are friendly, they are helpful- everything that will draw us back to this place.

Genesis Vegan Restaurant

We had tried a few vegetarian / vegan restaurants and none had disappointed so far. However, this place which is apparently very popular turned out to be rather disappointing.

The lady boss (I presume) kept pushing for us to try the Turkey Special ($15.90). She said that it was a December special and strongly recommended it. Although nearly twice the price of other mains, I agreed since it came with a corn chowder soup as well.

Turned out that the Turkey Special tasted really awkward. The supposed vegan turkey comprised of a thick beancurd skin with ingredients like millet with a slightly nutty taste. Dry and unappetising. There was a small portion of quinoa and was probably sufficient to feed my 7-year-old self. Only the cranberry sauce tasted decent.

Not value for money.

Boomarang Bistro & Bar (Circular Road)

We had an unsatisfying lunch along Circular Road on a Sunday afternoon where 3/4 of the shops were closed.

Since the meal wasn't great, we decided to go for some desserts to cure the lunch-wasn't-great syndrome

Not feeling very confident on how the desserts here were (since we have never tried it), we decided to go ahead anyway since we already had a not-so-good lunch.

We popped in and decided to have the Housemade Dessert ($8). The staff told us that it was a cappuccino slice served with vanilla ice cream. Sure, cappuccino and ice cream, guess it can't be that bad! We also requested to change the vanilla ice cream to chocolate ice cream instead.

Turned out, eating the Cappuccino Slice was like skipping on rainbows and breathing in sunlight. Alternating between layers of cappuccino ice cream, chocolate and cake, this was a much better version of Swensen's ice cream cake. Couple that brain freeze with more Haagen Daaz chocolate ice cream, this ice cream combination was sinful and decadent.

JBM Coffee & Dining

I always appreciate places in CBD that open till late because if I'm working late, at least I won't be starving. One Raffles Place re-opened recently and one night, we decided to pop by JBM Coffee & Dining

I didn't have much expectations for this place, and expected it to serve average food.

There was a 1-for-1 promotion and since we didn't mind eating duck, we got the JBM Ling Duck ($19). I enjoyed this dish thoroughly- beautifully cooked slices of duck,  juicy mushrooms and a tangy rose sauce to accompany the linguine.

We also got the Chocolate Tart ($4.50). In an area where overpriced desserts are the norm, the decently priced tart with its smooth chocolate piled on a pie crust was value for money.

If the quality of all the items on the menu are like what I have eaten, I will be looking forward to more trips to this restaurant. Service was also polite.

The Pelican Seafood Bar and Grill

I'm a fan of seafood done in any style, which was why I was attracted to the Pelican Platter ($128) here. However, we didn't have it in the end because we thought our budget was better spent on a variety of food.

First up was the complimentary sour dough bread. It took us a while before we figured that the tiny bits embedded in the bread were seaweed. The seaweed had a strong "sea smell" and this was the beginning of a good meal.

We had the Old Fashioned Crab Cakes ($22). It's been a long time since I ordered crab cakes. The crab cakes here comprised of lots of crab meat, encrusted in a crispy coating and accompanied with tartar sauce.

The Baked Snapper Pie ($38) was visually pleasing to begin with. It's obviously shouting, "Hey! I contain fish!" After you reluctantly use your fork to pierce through the flaky crust (how can anyone destroy that beautiful fish motif), you reach a bed of creamy stew with boneless snapper. The key is that it is boneless. We finished every single drop of the stew because it was not too salty, and just a bowl of good stew.

While contemplating whether to order dessert, we gave in and got a Double Chocolate Whoopie Pie ($16). This is enough for two to share because it's incredibly rich. You will definitely like it if you are a chocolate lover.

The decor and ambience of this place was excellent. Service was attentive but not intrusive.

Folks Collective

Thai restaurants in Singapore can be generally categorised into the authentic ones (e.g. Ah Loh Thai), the ones you eat because you are lazy to think (e.g. Thai Express) and the cheap and good Thai food (E.g. Jai Thai). I have some problems trying to classify Folks Collective for the simple reason that it does not fall into any of the above-mentioned categories.

This place is a mish mash of designs- look at the following pictures and you know what I mean.

Interesting decor aside, their food is pretty good as well which was why I bothered going there a second time. I had a Seafood Pad Thai ($10.90). Not too oily, sweet but not overly sweet with fresh seafood.

I think the Cereal Soft-shell Crab ($18.90) is enough for 3 to share. On the menu, it states sharing between two or more but honestly, you wouldn't want to share this. Unfortunately, considerations of an expanding waistline kick in and your are forced to share, albeit extremely reluctantly. Normally, it's cereal prawn. This cereal soft-shell crab had a certain kick to it with the soft-shell crab and the cereal deep fried to perfect goodness.

The service here is also good. Their set-lunch menu prices seem pretty wallet friendly. I heard it can get really crowded on weekdays- this place is open on weekends as well, so you might want to head there when there are really few customers!

The Rotisserie

I always try to indulge in some good food on Fridays since it's nice to reward yourself for a week of hard work, instead of having the usual packed food from the nearest food court for dinner. Since tomorrow is a public holiday, my self-imposed rule got shifted to Thursday night instead. I decided to go to The Rotisserie today, after my friends introduced me to this part of CBD which I never knew existed.

It was initially quite confusing how I should place my order. I ordered a Quarter Roasted Chicken ($11.50) which gave me the choice of Hot Chips/Vegetables/Salad. Vegetables and salad sounded pretty much the same to me. So I had to ask the cashier what they were. She pointed to another counter and helpfully stated that if I changed my mind, I could just tell the lady at the counter that I wanted the other option instead. It would have been so much better if they had just put a board saying what the sides were though!

I'm very picky about roasted chicken. It can't be dry, it can't be bloody. This was neither- it was tender yet cooked well! I chose vegetables. This came with mashed potato, corn and cauliflower. Pretty standard.

I also had the Lemon Drizzle Cake ($4). It reminded me so much of the afternoons I used to sit on the couch watching Ina Garten from Food Network cook or bake using the ingredients from her garden. The homely feel of the food was contained within this cake. So deceptively simple yet so delicious. The thing I really liked about the cake was that it was not too sweet. You were also given the choice of how much to drizzle over the cake- or for that matter, whether to drizzle or not. The syrupy thing was sour and sweet, and it's the kind of combination with the cake that makes you think, "My life is simple, but it sure is good."

Very decent prices considering that it's in the CBD area. Definitely putting it on my list of places to revisit!

Ba Xian 八仙

I have been eating too much dim sum for my own good. But here's one more to add to the list. The first time we went to Ba Xian, it was pretty good. But this time, we felt like the dim sum was nothing special. Furthermore, I wouldn't pay a price premium just to get a view from the 62nd floor. Weekend dim sum is cheaper.

1) Steamed Siew Mai with Dried Scallop ($3.60 for 3 pieces)
It was an interesting combination with the dried scallop, as compared to the normal roe. Fresh juicy prawns.

2) Mini Egg Tartlets ($5 for 3 pieces)
These had lotus seeds embedded within the egg. Not the best combination I would think. Furthermore, the egg was overcooked.

3) Steamed Har Kow with Asparagus ($3.60 for 3 pieces)
The asparagus didn't add any flavour to the har kow. The prawns were good though.

4) Steamed Chee Cheong Fun with Prawns, Scallops and Pork Char Siew ($5 per portion)
The fresh ingredients were wrapped snugly within the smooth skin of the chee cheong fun.

5) Pork Congee with Dried Scallop and Century Egg ($4.50 per portion)
This has to be one of the most boring porridge I have tried. It tasted like nothing was added to the congee. Good for the health conscious. But it was very bland and lacking in ingredients.

6) Stir-Fried Carrot Cake with Prawns in X.O. Sauce ($5 per portion)
It used to be one of our favourite dishes here. While still good, it just didn't strike us as being as wonderful as the previous round. Slightly spicy.

7) Pan-Fried Chee Cheong Fun with Sesame and Seafood Sauce ($5 per portion)
The accompanying sauce was delicious- how can a combination of sesame and seafood sauce not be? Other than that, it was just plain old boring chee cheong fun, where the highlight is really the sauce.

8) Deep fried dumpling
Pretty standard.

Service was so-so, where we only got a refill of our tea cups one throughout the whole meal. Food took quite some time to come when we ordered a second round. As I said earlier, I probably wouldn't pay this amount for the view. Please note that dress code applies.

Mouth Restaurant 地茂馆 (China Square Central)

We decided to head down to Mouth Restaurant 地茂馆 a couple of weeks ago. If you look at the picture carefully, you will see that the restaurant is located at the shophouse with light blue paint. Don't you just love how colourful some of the shophouses in Singapore can be?

We claimed some offer from Facebook for a free peking duck with minimum spending of $128. On their website, they also state that there's a OCBC coupon with the same deal. For example, the $128 that we spent does not include the price of desserts or the price of the duck meat. So note the terms and conditions and call them up to make them tell you all the restrictions before going.

We ordered the usual dimsum. We ordered Egg Tarts ($4) which unfortunately ran out quickly. They were delicious. We also ordered Steamed Har Gao ($4.50) and Siew Mai ($4.50), which were very ordinary. I didn't eat the Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling ($4.80 for 4) so I can't comment!

The Porridge with Century Egg/Shredded Pork ($4.50) is enough for 2 to share if you want to preserve some stomach space.

This is what they are well-known for: Cream of Salted Egg Yolk Bun ($8). I didn't eat it because I'm not a fan of salted egg yolk to begin with. But those who ate it found that it was overrated.

One of the waitresses highly recommended this Abalone Gold Packet ($14.80). The texture of the abalone was good and chewy but that was about it. Didn't particularly fancy something in there, but I'm not very sure what seafood that was.

We came here for the Peking Duck (normally $68). I can't really put a finger to it but I don't find it as good as other peking ducks I've tried.

This was Duck fried with Kobe Sauce ($10 if you ordered the Peking Duck skin). I liked the flavours of this dish, not too salty and the duck had a smokey taste.

Together with some other dishes such as Steamed Spicy Chicken Claw ($3.50), Steamed Spare Ribs ($4.20), Steamed Prawn Rice Roll ($5), Fried Broccoli with Prawn and Scallop ($25) and a Beancurd Claypot with Mixed Seafood ($16), it cost us $199.10.

We obviously didn't intend to order so much but due to various restrictions when ordering ($128 spending does not include dessert or the price of frying the duck meat etc), the amount just snowballed. I think more transparency is needed in this area and you should be aware of this before ordering if you are using your OCBC coupon and credit card. As a result, I was stuffed to the brim because we had to order so much food in order to get a free peking duck- not worth it.

No fun or joy when you're eating just because you have to meet a price quota. Perhaps due to this, we weren't particularly impressed by the food!

Service was very enthusiastic though, with the waitress who served us having good knowledge of the dishes in the menu. She also offered to make an immediate order of the salted egg yolk bun so that we didn't have to wait too long for it!
